Il 22 settembre la sede romana di SPAZIO RIVOLUZIONE presenterà l’ultima performance di Santiago Sierra, che assumerà la forma di una lettura continua in commemorazione dei palestinesi uccisi nella Palestina storica dallo Stato israeliano, dalle sue forze e dai coloni a partire dalla fondazione dello Stato di Israele, il 14 maggio 1948.
La performance avrà inizio alle ore 18:00 del 22 settembre presso 6 Stannary Street, Londra, SE11 4AA e rimarrà aperta fino a mezzanotte. Sarà aperta ogni giorno dalle 10:00 alle 18:00, con diretta streaming 24 ore su 24, 7 giorni su 7, attraverso il sito web di A/POLITICAL e, a livello globale, tramite una rete di musei.
ISRAELI STATE CRIMES IN PALESTINE SINCE 14 MAY 1948 è stato prodotto e curato da A/POLITICAL e co-curato insieme all’artista e performer Maricel Álvarez. Il progetto è realizzato in collaborazione con un istituto di ricerca con sede in Palestina, che ha chiesto di rimanere anonimo.
I nomi sono stati raccolti a partire da fonti consolidate, tra cui gli elenchi del Ministero della Salute di Gaza tramite Iraq Body Count, B’Tselem, il Palestinian Information Centre tramite WAFA: The Palestinian News and Information Agency, The Shireen Observatory e The Jerusalem Legal Aid and Human Rights Centre, insieme a una ricerca tuttora in corso basata su monografie storiche e altre pubblicazioni accademiche, riviste scientifiche — tra cui il Journal of Palestine Studies — documenti delle Nazioni Unite, fascicoli legali, registri pubblicati, materiali d’archivio e altre fonti pubblicate.
Questi registri esistono in larga misura grazie al lavoro del popolo palestinese e al suo impegno nel documentare e ricordare le vite e le morti della propria gente. A/POLITICAL riconosce che, sebbene abbia collaborato con giornalisti, scienziati e storici per produrre il resoconto più completo e accurato possibile, l’occupazione in corso, lo sfollamento, la distruzione degli archivi e le restrizioni all’accesso ai documenti fanno sì che vi siano inevitabilmente delle lacune in ciò che è possibile recuperare. Nei casi in cui l’identità di una vittima non sia stata registrata, ogni individuo sarà rappresentato dalla parola araba مجهول (Majhul), che significa «Sconosciuto».
Nel contesto del genocidio in corso in Palestina e del continuo recupero di nomi e documenti, questo non deve essere inteso come un resoconto definitivo o completo, bensì come parte di un processo continuo di raccolta e verifica di nomi e documenti, volto a onorare il maggior numero possibile di vittime. Una metodologia dettagliata che illustrerà l’ambito e i parametri della ricerca, insieme a un elenco completo delle fonti, sarà pubblicata in occasione del lancio della performance. L’elenco letto durante la performance sarà reso disponibile al termine della stessa.
ISRAELI STATE CRIMES IN PALESTINE SINCE 14 MAY 1948 segue la stessa metodologia di The Names of Those Killed in the Syrian Conflict Between the 15th March 2011 and the 31st December 2016 (2017) ed è l’ultima aggiunta a una serie tuttora in corso che comprende 1549 State Crimes (2007), una recitazione pubblica dei nomi di attivisti messicani scomparsi e assassinati; 2205 State Crimes (2015), una recitazione pubblica dei nomi delle persone uccise tra luglio e agosto 2014 durante l’attacco israeliano a Gaza, comprendente sia palestinesi sia israeliani; e 697 State Crimes (2018), una recitazione pubblica dei nomi delle persone uccise tra il 26 luglio 2014 e il 30 agosto 2018 nel conflitto israelo-palestinese, che include i nomi dei palestinesi uccisi. Rendendo omaggio all’approccio minimalista alla rappresentazione del tempo e della scala adottato nel progetto One Million Years di On Kawara, Sierra ha utilizzato questo approccio di lunga durata in opere precedenti, come la performance del 2004 120 Hours Of Continuous Reading Of A Telephone Book.

On 22 September SPAZIO RIVOLUZIONE / ROMA will present Santiago Sierra’s latest performance, produced by A/POLITICAL, taking the form of a continuous readingcommemorating Palestinians killed in historic Palestine by the Israeli state, its forces and settlers since the establishment of the State of Israel on 14 May 1948.
The performance will begin at 6pm on the 22nd September at A/POLITICAL, 6 Stannary Street, London, SE11 4AA and will remain open until midnight. Opening daily from 10am to 6pm, with the live-stream 24/7 via www.statecrimes.org and globally through a network of museums.
ISRAELI STATE CRIMES IN PALESTINE SINCE 14 MAY 1948 has been produced and curated by A/POLITICAL and co-curated with artist and performer Maricel Álvarez. The project is in partnership with a research institution based in Palestine, who have requested to remain anonymous.
The names have been compiled from established sources including the Gaza Ministry of Health lists via Iraq Body Count, B’Tselem, the Palestinian Information Centre via WAFA: The Palestinian News and Information Agency, The Shireen Observatory, and The Jerusalem Legal Aidand Human Rights Centre, alongside ongoing research drawing on historical monographs and other scholarly publications, academic journals—including the Journal of Palestine Studies—UN records, legal files, published registers, archival material and other published sources.
These records exist largely because of the work of the Palestinian people and their commitment to documenting and remembering the lives and deaths of their people. A/POLITICAL acknowledges that, while it has collaborated with journalists, scientists and historians to produce the most complete and accurate record possible, the ongoing occupation, displacement, destruction of archives and restrictions on access to records mean there will inevitably be gaps in what can be recovered. Where a victim’s identity has not been recorded, each individual will be represented by the Arabic word مجهول (Majhul)—meaning “Unknown”.
In the context of the ongoing genocide in Palestine, and the continued recovery of names and records, this should not be understood as a final or complete account, but as part of an ongoing process of gathering and checking names and records in order to honour as many victims as possible. A detailed methodology outlining the scope and parameters of the research, together with a full source list, will be released at the launch of the performance. The list read during the performance will be made available at its conclusion.
ISRAELI STATE CRIMES IN PALESTINESINCE 14 MAY 1948 follows the same methodology as The Names of Those Killed in the Syrian Conflict Between the 15th March 2011 and the 31st December 2016 (2017) and is the latest addition to an ongoing series that includes 1549 State Crimes (2007), a public recitation of the namesof disappeared and murdered Mexican activists; 2205 State Crimes (2015), a public recitation of the names of those killed between July and August 2014 during Israel’s assault on Gaza, including both Palestinians and Israelis; and 697 State Crimes (2018), a public recitation of the names of those killed between 26 July 2014 and 30 August 2018 in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, featuring the names of Palestinians killed. Paying tributeto the minimalist approach to representing time and scale in On Kawara’s One Million Years project, Sierra has utilised this durational approach in previous works, such as the 2004 performance 120 Hours Of Continuous Reading Of A Telephone Book. The performance has been produced on the occassion of DEATH & MONEY, Santiago Sierra’s upcoming exhibition curated by A/POLITICAL at Brutus, Rotterdam from September 20 to December 20, 2026, and will be livestreamed internationally including BPS22 Museum, Belgium; ICA, Bulgaria; SAW, Canada; Museum of Solidarity Salvador Allende, Santiago, Chile; Moderna Galerija (MG+MSUM), Slovenia, and Rua Red in Dublin; Dar Jacir, Bethlem; Thy Lab, Hong Kong; Kyivbiennal, Ukraine; Spazio Rivoluzione, Rome
